There are several reasons why I use email to publish on my website. I try to put them all down in this writing about email blogging.
“The greatest invention after email is publishing by email”.
The reasons to publish by email
Not connected all the time
I’m in a special situation. It used to be normal for almost everybody, but now, not to be connected to the Internet all the time is an exception. I fall in that category. There can be days or weeks that I don’t have the possibility to be connected to the Internet. So, I have to write my contributions at home and save them to publish later.
The simplest way to do that is by email—and I don’t mean Hotmail by browser—but just a normal email-program like Eudora. The mails just get saved until I once connect to the Internet, and there they go, all together in a minute.
I like email
It is a program I use since 15 years or more. I never have this writers block when I’m writing emails. The layout of the screen is clean and simple. Very good to concentrate on the content and not on anything that has to do with how it looks.
I don’t like the on-line editors with all the buttons and the sluggish performance.
It’s cheaper
I don’t spend time in Internet-Cafe’s or have to pay for high-speed Internet-connections.
There is always a back-up of the post
In the outbox, I can find all my contributions. If that fails I log-in to my email-account by gmail. In that sense it is also very secure and safe.
The psychological moment
Email is known. No surprises there. If I’m interrupted I save my mail and work on it a bit later. It is worry-free, understandable so that I can concentrate on the job of writing and nothing else.
Pictures too?
Yes, I do pictures too. You have to get used to a certain routine, but after that, it works perfect. I don’t spend too much time on editing the pictures itself any more, that is all standardized and still with a little bit of flexibility.
Any disadvantages?
The main disadvantage is that not many people use email to fill the content on the Internet. You are a strange bird and the software you will use you have to configure to your own needs. It cost some time and perseverance to set it all up to what you want.
What I can do, regarding content-lay out, navigating, pictures and sound
- I can give simple html-commands in a email-friendly way, so that the posts look attractive.
- I can include pictures on the spot I want. For now only centered, but that I will change in the future.
- I can include tags in my posts, so that I have control about the navigation.
- Sounds and music are just another ‘blob’ like pictures.
- I can update posts that I made.
Do I need more?
Not at this moment. But if there will be something that is not there, for sure it can be made.
This is only one way
Yes, it is only concentrated on pushing publications on the Internet. No interaction possible, except by email. No discussions. I’ve seen too many discussion-boards filled with comments that are only high-volume, low-content.
For sure I want to discuss, but I cannot moderate a discussion if I’m not on-line every day. So, for this moment, I only want that readers enjoy my stories and email me back. (I will ask them first if I want to publish their reaction). I have this mysterious “track-back” on, the “allow pings”.
My setup
This will be in a future mail. Check with tags email blogging and moblogging.
